I finally hit my first dry and warm trackday of the year. The suspension has now been dialed in. The bike was running strong. And I am out onto the track.
First session out, I dialed down from 2:20 to 2:11. My previous best at the track was a 2:04, but I was just shooting to get into the single digits. The next session out, my first (untimed) lap was strong and I was getting ready to try to grind out some good times. Then it happened. Coming through 14 and 15 onto the main straight, I started getting on the gas and then the bike started running on one cylinder. Argh!
I finished the rest of the lap with my hand up (the universal sign for "something is wrong, be careful around my bike") and pulled in. I immediately called the shop and explained what had happened. Desmoto Sport suggested a few things and I started ripping the bike apart. About 45 minutes later I had inspected the sparkplugs and swapped the coils. I tried disconnecting the power commander and then reconnecting it. The bike started running properly again, but I knew the real issue hadn't been addressed. I hoped to just get out and get some laps in and deal with the issue at another time.
I got back out and about two laps in, my clutch started slipping. I ended up riding out the rest of the lap in hopes of getting the feel of a couple turns, even if I couldn't get on the gas very hard.
I came back in and frantically started ripping the bike apart (again). I'm getting quick changing clutch plates, so I got back out for 2 good sessions at the end of the day. The last session of the day I really started feeling comfortable on the bike. In particular, I noticed I can get on the gas incredibly early in the turn and not lose traction. I'll need this ability to try to make up for the lack of horsepower I have on the straights... I felt good about being able to set up "controlled experiments" -- in a few turns where I felt I could go faster, I started gradually braking later into the turn and realized I was still completely in control.
Physically, I am pretty beat. My back has been giving me trouble and my legs were shot by the end of the day. I'm back out at the track again on May 6 and 7 for more conditioning and fine-tuning with the bike. All this is trying to prepare me for May 10 and 11 at Sears Point, where I really want to start progressing beyond where I had been last year.
